Le istituzioni accademiche sono impegnate a favore della democrazia, della sovranità digitale e della sostenibilità ambientale.

Ma questi valori guidano anche le decisioni di acquisto? Prendiamo in esame #Elsevier, uno dei principali fornitori di pubblicazioni accademiche, analisi e software, e il suo gruppo aziendale più ampio:

🛢️ Elsevier collabora con l'industria dei combustibili fossili, fornendo dati e analisi a supporto dell'esplorazione di petrolio e gas.

🔎 LexisNexis Risk Solutions, società affiliata di Elsevier, fornisce servizi di dati all'agenzia statunitense per l'immigrazione e le dogane (ICE).

🏝️ Inoltre, alcune società che fanno parte delle strutture aziendali di Elsevier sono state registrate in giurisdizioni comunemente associate all'elusione fiscale e ai paradisi fiscali.

Allo stesso tempo, le istituzioni accademiche spendono complessivamente 3,16 miliardi di euro in prodotti e servizi di Elsevier.

💰 Ogni contratto rappresenta anche una decisione su quali infrastrutture e organizzazioni finanziamo.

Esistono delle alternative. Le infrastrutture aperte si basano su un modello fondamentalmente diverso: trasparenza, governance comunitaria e l'idea che le infrastrutture accademiche critiche debbano essere al servizio dell'interesse pubblico.

Tuttavia, molte di queste infrastrutture sono in difficoltà a causa di finanziamenti insufficienti.

Non si tratta di fingere che cambiare le infrastrutture sia facile. Non lo è. Ma sicuramente dovremmo almeno chiederci:

👉 Le organizzazioni che finanziamo contribuiscono a costruire il futuro che desideriamo?
